Devices at School

1st to 5th Form

Priorities for the device for 1st-5th Formers:

For these reasons a modern iPad is required- any model except iPad Mini. The Apple Store lists all modern iPad, iPad Air and iPad Pro models suitable for school.

6th Form

Priorities for the device at 6th Form:

To this end 5th and 6th Form pupils who need to replace their iPad may wish to consider a laptop or 2-in-1 laptop/tablet hybrid- either a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Levono Thinkpad 2-in-1, Microsoft Surface with keyboard case or other Windows laptop device.

Typical Specs: 13" screen, Intel Core i5 or higher, USB-C ports, HDMI & Ethernet optional.

Laptops do not have scan-functionality, however, which is a major drawback. The school currently has a bring-your-own-device policy for 6th form.

For Parents: Parental Restrictions

At school, one of the pillars of Digital Literacy education is responsible technology use. No two pupils are the same, however, and all pupils will need different support for a different duration. iPads have the ability to be managed my parents, if parents deem it appropriate for their child to have these restrictions in place. Time limits can be set, app installations restricted and websites filtered, to name a few. I would recommend that these restrictions are added in early- perhaps during the initial iPad setup- as it is often harder to change habits once set in.
